By Kimberly LovisiLong Island cracks drink on monitoring sex offenders this Halloween. This year Nassau and Suffolk counties are cracking down and watching registered sex offenders according to The Daily News. These individuals are not allowed to dress up in a costume or answer their door for trick-or-treaters. "They're not supposed to have any contact with children on Halloween," said Timothy Driscoll. Nassau County deputy county executive for law enforcement and public safety. There are 315 registered sex offenders in Nassau county and authorities will be focusing on 175 of them who committed acts with children 16 or younger. "They'll be checking during the prime trick-or-treating hours [2 p m to 7:30 p m.] to make sure the sex offenders are not enticing children to trick-or-treat at their homes," said Driscoll who is heading the Nassau County initiative called Operation Safe Sweets. So what can you do to protect your children? Take your kids out trick-or-treating don’t let them go alone and walk them to the door. It is always better to be safe than sorry so check www parentsformeganslaw org for the list of registered offenders in your area. "The real monsters aren't wearing costumes on Halloween," Laura Ahearn said. "They live in our neighborhoods and prey on the most vulnerable."
on November 02 2007 08:40:33This is without a doubt one of the most politically motivated and probably illegal guard actions I have ever heard of. Of the 315 registered sex offenders mentioned above just how many like little girls or little boys? How many of them were guilty of violent assail date rape indecent exposure or one of the many many many other "sex" crimes that have absolutely nothing to do with children? But it made the cops look good. As if they were really doing something. Prior to this "action" by the cops. I wonder just how many of the sex offenders were arrested and convicted based on crimes they committed with children on Halloween. Speaking of predators however have you seen the new Halloween costumes for 12-14 year olds? No? Very sexy. Predator bait if I ever saw it. Nurse french waitress little bo look costumes that go to new levels above the knees and below the navel. Just what the thinking man wants his 13 year old daughter to wear out on Halloween night. The only thing I can think of that justifies allowing your child to wear one of these is some kind of vicarious sexual excite some women must get when they see their daughter all dressed up desire that. Dads of course get no say in the matter unless they are "real" men.
on November 02 2007 08:59:20Oldfart,Of the 315 registered sex offenders just how many like little girls or little boys????????That is your argument? If only ONE does it's enough. They are after all REGISTERED offenders. What does that convey to you?Looks to me like you are blaming the victims here. Costumes that are predator bait?
on November 02 2007 09:11:22If one sexual offender likes little girls or little boys it is ok to confine 314 others to their homes? Even if they were just guilty of taking a pee in an alley walking home from a bar? Typical right wing neo-nazi thinking. As I said probably illegal. You obviously did not see the costumes or you would know what I am talking about. What kind of parents would change their children up as predator bait? I said that and I meant it? I can't imagine my ex-son-in-law allowing my 13 year old granddaughter to feature any of those costumes even at a party. Here's a link to one site that sells them:Mind you - poor populate will not buy these costumes. These costumes are bought for the daughters of yuppies and other middle class and upper middle class types. The so-called well-educated classes.
on November 02 2007 09:36:38Oldfart. Are you deliberately obtuse yes I have seen them and find them awful. But tell me would you be just as fast to say that the way a woman dressed was the reason she was raped. The same goes here. Will you gratify furnish the poor a rest. I dont evaluate even they would want YOU defending them.
on November 02 2007 09:48:42From the point of view of a bystander yes I would blame the parents if they dressed their daughter like that allowed her to go out on Halloween dressed like that and by their neglect put her in a situation where she was bemock. Would I blame the victim? No. My rather obtuse point about the poor was to stave off the expected contend by various people who would be to believe that only the "lower" classes would dress their daughters like that when it is in fact the vicarious sexual needs of middle-aged yuppy mothers reliving their youth that drive them to dress their daughters like that.
